K&K Team ready for 2010

Kevin Wicke ready to defend Quick 32 Sportsman Series title

STRATFORD, ONTARIO (March 31, 2010) - The K&K Race Team won the inaugural Quick 32 Sportsman Championship Point Award Series in 2009 and the Champions are anxious to defend their title in 2010.

111009aWith a very successful initial season, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts will continue to be one of Canada’s most competitive drag racing series.  There will be more teams and quicker fields, but the guys at K&K are up to the challenge.

Consistency was the key for the K&K Team and their Dodge Stratus in 2009 and they are looking for more of the same in 2010.

“We had a pretty good season but we definitely had a few breaks last year,” said team driver Kevin Wicke. “This year will be a much tougher Championship Point Award Series chase, and there will be more quality teams in the points.”

With over 32 teams already registered for the 2010 Quick 32 Sportsman Series, it is shaping up to be a great season. Although the K&K combination will be much the same, the team has made a few improvements over the winter.

“We made some upgrades in the valve train and nitrous system. These were more of a preventative measure than anything, in hopes of eliminating parts failure and improve our run-to-run consistency,” explained Wicke.

111009bCrew Chief Kevin Zimmer knows there will be much tougher competition this season. “If you look down the list of teams it gets pretty scary...Kalin, Grubb, McMillen and Aitken just to name a few, all these guys can win races.  I told the guys at the beginning of last year that you could win the points without winning an event and they thought I was crazy, but we did it. We will just focus on our program, go rounds and let the points fall where they will. It seemed to work out okay last year.”

The K&K Team will do some testing at the Grand Bend Motorplex to get ready for the season opener May 21- 23 at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario. They will also compete at the IHRA Nitro Jam Series events in Grand Bend and Martin, Michigan, both of which they won in recent years.

K&K Racing is supported by Fram Canada, Perth Auto Dismantlers, Skully Bros. Metal Fabrication, Bear’s Performance Products, Ron’s Precision Machine, Fraser Asphalt Paving, Hutch’s Transmission and CVR Inc.

TJ Pruitt drives to $10,000 Super 7 Series Victory at MMP

MONTGOMERY, AL - TJ Pruitt captured his first event win of the season after surviving eight grueling rounds at Montgomery Motorsports Park's Super 7 Series event No.2 on Saturday. The victory is the first Super 7 Series event win for the Internet Magazine publisher who also managed to race to a quarter-final finish at the series' season opener last month. Pruitt, behind the wheel of his Mullis Race Cars dragster, defeated AJ Ashe in the finals.

"This was just a great weekend," Pruitt said. "Things just fell into place at the right time. We are off to a pretty good season start and I'm hoping that we can continue to go rounds. A.J. Ashe always shows up with his game face on and congratulations to him for racing to two straight finals this past weekend."

"The weekend started off kind of ruff, but it's amazing how your weekend can turn around at the blink of an eye. It's been a long-time-coming and it feels good to finally make it to the winner's circle of an event like the Super 7 Series."

Pruitt was quick to give credit (of the win) to the Goodyear D2A Tires that were deadly consistent throughout the weekend. Pruitt also thanked BTE, Ricky Taylor Inc (RTI), Jim Brown, JLowe Racing Engines, and Tindle Racing for their continuing support.

Next up for Pruitt is the Huntsville Engine King of the Coast Series Event at Gulfport Dragway, MS, April 10-11.

World champion drag racer Dixon tabs Houston Raceway Park as one of his favs

HOUSTON (March 30) -- In 22 years of drag racing competition, Houston Raceway Park has become a special place for many drivers.

Two-time world champion Larry Dixon, driver of the Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel dragster has made more than his fair share of memories at HRP.

"It's a great event, a great racetrack, a great state," Dixon said. "One of the things I think about in regards to Houston is being the first guy to run in the 4.40s. That happened right there at HRP.

"What's cool now is it doesn't look like anybody will get the opportunity to be the first to run in the 4.30s in the quarter mile now that we're racing to 1,000 foot instead so that may be the last big barrier broken for that era."

Dixon's fond memories of that stunning 4.486-second pass in April of 1999 are tempered a bit by the fact he didn't go on to win the race itself. But there was a unique silver lining to the story.

"At the spring race that year, we were the first car to run in the 4.40s, but didn't go home with the win," Dixon said. "Actually (crew chief) Dick LaHaie did. He was working with Doug Herbert at the time and they were running in the 4.60s at that race, but they got the win."

By the time the NHRA schedule worked its way back to Houston for the fall event, Dixon and LaHaie had teamed up.

"We turn around at the fall race, Dick LaHaie was tuning my car then," Dixon said. "Alan Johnson and Gary Scezli were running 4.40s, and we were running in the 4.60s, and this time we go home with the win. That always stuck in my mind.

"It's a good reminder of how it is out here. You don't have to be the quickest car on the track, but you've got to get it down the track every run and keep people honest. I learned a lot with Dick in the years I got to spend with him and getting down the track every time is the one thing that has always stuck with me."

Nowadays, the second most prolific Top Fuel racer on tour is driving for Alan Johnson with Jason McCulloch turning the wrenches on his 8,000 horsepower rail. The team is at or near the top at every event and arrives at the 23rd annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals, April 9-11 at Houston Raceway Park, fourth in the points.

"Houston has one of the quickest and fastest tracks on tour," said Dixon, who will be looking for his landmark 50th career victory at HRP. "It's so close to sea level that we can make a ton of horsepower and the Angel family, well they're racers, so they know how to keep the track in top shape. I expect we can challenge for the win and maybe run some big-time numbers for sure.

"I love that place. I've won there two times and I can tell you another win would be fine with me."

Dixon added that he always takes the opportunity to meet up with many of his Houston-based friends when he's in the Lone Star State.

"When we head to Texas, I also think about Darrell Russell," Dixon said of the late Top Fuel driver, who hailed from nearby Hockley, Texas. "I love to see his bride Julie and Darrell's parents at the races. They're awesome people."

In the past 36 months, Houston Raceway Park has aggressively sought to improve its facility. In working with the Texas Department of Transportation, the track was able to secure direct access to Interstate 10 via the new Grand Parkway, drastically reducing fans ingress and egress to the parking lots. The pits were also resurfaced and extended, Musco lighting for the track was installed behind the grandstands to give fans an unobstructed view of the action, and the racing surface itself was ground and smoothed for optimum performance. There also is a brand new indoor/outdoor Top Eliminator Club that brings guests closer to the action than ever before.

Houston Raceway Park is located 25 miles east of downtown Houston off Interstate-10 in Baytown. Take Exit 799 (SH 99 Grand Parkway) and go South to FM 565 (first exit).  Take a right at FM 565 and Houston Raceway Park is located on the right side.

For more information about Houston Raceway Park visit www.houstonraceway.com or call 281-383-7223.

DMR GIVES MILDURA AN EASTER TREAT

With three rounds remaining in the ANDRA Pro Series
Top Fuel Championship Mildura based racer Darren
Morgan will take the opportunity to test some new
components on his Shannon's Insurance dragster at the
upcoming Edge Motel Easter Shootout on Saturday April
3. The event will be staged in Morgan's home town at
the 1/8 mile Mildura Sunset Strip so it will provide
the chance for his local sponsors and fans to witness
the 7,000 horsepower machine in action on home turf.
During a recent conversation with team owner/driver
Darren Morgan he mentioned that the entire Darren
Morgan Racing (DMR) team are excited about the chance
to perform a couple of passes at home and that they
can't wait until the weekend. "We have some new
components that we want to test and the Easter meeting
is a good chance for us" he added.

"We really enjoy racing in front of our home crowd in
Mildura. It gives us a chance to repay the local
community for their support. Hopefully if the test
goes well we can put on a good show for the crowd. We
have run at Mildura before with our best time being a
3.598 at 177.28 mph over the 1/8th mile track".
"Finally we must thank Shannon's for their support of
the (DMR) Top Fuel Dragster. This weekend will be a
special one for the entire team as it will be the
first time we would have run under the Shannon's
Insurance banner at home so it will be a good
opportunity to represent the company in our home
town".

Throughout the event the team plans to do two passes,
both of which will be at night.

Having the DMR Top Fuel dragster at the Easter
Shootout will be a hu ge boost for the event and their
appearance comes hot on the heels of an extremely
successful meeting on March 20 when the Mildura Sunset
Strip held the Mildura Slamfest, which attracted a
full field of Top Doorslammers and Supercharged
Outlaws. In front of what was a huge crowd Scott
McLean reset the track ET record to 4.15 at
178.37mph.Although it was supposed to be a night off
for the DMR team several of the crew members lent a
hand working on the Team Bray racing cars.

The next championship event for DMR will be the ENZED
Australian Top Fuel Championships which will be held
on the 17-18th April 2010 at Queensland's Willowbank
Raceway. The meeting will be Round 5 of the Australian
Top Fuel Championship and with Darren currently
sitting in 5th position in the overall championship
the team is looking forward to a strong finish to the
season.

Eagle Motorplex receives AHRA sanction

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (March 30, 2010) - The American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) welcomed Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft, British Columbia as the most recent AHRA sanctioned member track, AHRA officials announced today.

"We are very pleased to add Eagle Motorplex to the AHRA family of sanctioned tracks," said AHRA CEO Troy Moe. "The facility is a first- rate track, definitely a crown jewel of Canadian drag racing."

The facility is a part of the Thompson nation in Western Canada that extends from Cache Creek south to just north of Seattle and is situated on the site of the Ashcroft/Cache Creek Aero Club's former airstrip. Featuring a 300-foot concrete launch pad, the 60-foot-wide track is at 1700-feet above sea level.

The final stop on the 2010 AHRA Reunion Tour is scheduled to be held at Eagle Motorplex August 14-15th.

"We are looking forward to a long and mutually-beneficial relationship with Eagle Motorplex, their staff, and the fans and racers who call the Eagleplex their home track," Moe said.

The AHRA is a drag racing membership organization founded in 1956 by Walt Mentzer to give a voice to drag racers across North America. The organization sanctions racetracks and promotes drag racing events throughout the United States and Canada.  The company is headquartered in Spokane Valley, Wash., and has a divisional office in Panama City, Fla. The 2010 schedule is highlighted by several drag racing events
including: the Reunion Tour, the U.S. Sportsmen Series, the Canadian Sportsmen Tour, and the AHRA U.S. Funny Car Championships. The AHRA also offers several track-specific sanctioned bracket-racing series.

Lucas Oil Makes Long-Term Commitment to Litton and Nitro Jam with Three-Year Deal

NORWALK, Ohio (March 30, 2010) – With interest in the Nitro Jam series at an all-time high IHRA is pleased to announce that Lucas Oil has agreed to a new three-year deal with Bruce Litton that will keep Litton and his popular Lucas Oil Slick Mist Top Fuel dragster in the spotlight as a key component of the new Nitro Jam format.

Forrest Lucas, owner of Lucas Oil and an influential person within the motorsports industry, says both Litton's performance and the success of the new Nitro Jam series were both key factors in the decision.

"Bruce was our first Top Fuel guy that we ever sponsored so we have been with him since the beginning. He is a good personal friend and he always treats everyone fair. I am glad we can do this," Lucas said. "He is as reliable as anyone and always has his equipment in good shape. In that respect he is good for both of us – he puts on a good show and we get to be a part of that.

"We have a lot of representation over in NHRA and he is our representation over in IHRA, which has its own following. IHRA also has a new format that looks like it is going to be really successful and Bruce should be a star within it."

Litton, who is fifth all-time in Top Fuel victories, has been with Lucas for 14 seasons, but had had only one multi-year deal prior to this season, that being a two-year deal signed following his IHRA Top Fuel World Championship in 2007

"It is very exciting. All of my deals except for one have been one year deals and to get a three-year deal in today's economy is a big boost to our morale and a good shot in the arm. It makes us feel like Lucas Oil products has faith in us," Litton said. "We go out and try to represent our sponsor in the best possible way. This is our 14th year with them so it means that it will be on the car the rest of this year and for the 15th and 16th years as well.

"It is really cool and I am very excited about it. Sponsorships are hard to get and to be sponsored by a company that is not only nationally known, but known worldwide is unbelievable."

Litton's relationship with the Lucas family goes back the beginning of the Lucas Oil franchise and has led to one of the longest and most successful ongoing sponsorships in motorsports today.

"When I first started with them they were a newer company and I have watched them grow to what they are today. Even the things that they do that don't involve the automotive industry such as Lucas Oil Stadium, which is home of the Indianapolis Colts, is pretty amazing. I have seen them grow and they are everywhere now," Litton said. "I take pride in that because I have been a part of that. It is a family run business and it is really cool to see them succeed like they have."

In his career Litton is in the top five in nearly every statistical category with 50 final round appearances, 17 wins and a championship coming in 2007.

Litton is also a key part of the new Nitro Jam program which replaces traditional qualifying and eliminations with a Chicago-style format that rewards individual performance and crowns a different winner each night. The new format is also run within a fan-friendly timeframe and features additional racing and exhibitions to enhance the spectator experience.

Through two events the new format has been a huge success with large crowds and close, competitive racing.

"From what I understand it looks like the IHRA has a hit on their hands. They are obviously pretty smart about what they are doing. They have a lot of experience in the entertainment business so I wasn't a bit surprised that the format would work," Lucas said. "There is nothing wrong with it at all; it is just a different way of deciding a winner.

"In the long run you have a lot of people that can't come for the weekend, but they want to come for one good night or one day so this works well for them. I say good for the IHRA, it looks like they have a winner there."

Adding to the excitement is the fact that Litton is coming off of his first win of the season and his first under the new format earlier this month in Louisiana, an experience he says he won't soon forget.

"It was thrilling. The format is new for everyone and the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. Look at the turnout at the first two races. It is a family oriented type of format where people can come and watch the entire program from start to finish in a matter of hours," Litton said. "The more concentrated time frame is good for, not only Lucas Oil, but for all sponsors that get involved because it zeros in on their target of when their crowd is going to be there."

Litton also recently unveiled a brand-new paint scheme and team uniforms featuring the new Lucas Oil Slick Mist line of products, an exciting new look to accompany the new deal.

"This is something I have always dreamed about and now that it has become a reality it is really cool. It is a great deal for everyone involved from my team to IHRA to Lucas Oil," Litton said. "I couldn't be any prouder."

U.S. 131 Track Improvements Almost Complete

MARTIN, Mich. (March 26, 2010) – In an effort to maintain the reputation as the “The Fastest Track in Michigan” US 131 Motorsports Park, the home of the Northern Nitro Jam August 13-14, is continuing with recent upgrades.

Last fall at the end of Michigan’s racing season the concrete was extended from 500 feet to 1000 feet to allow it to slowly cure during the winter months.

Thankfully the weather cooperated and Michigan saw warmer than normal March temperatures. Penhall Corporation facilitated the grinding of the newly poured concrete and IHRA Track Specialist Jim Weinert polished the freshly ground racing surface.

Much of this work was completed this past Saturday and Sunday. Now the big task at hand is cleaning and preparing the surface for opening day, this Saturday, April 3. US 131’s general manager Jason Peterson will continue to oversee and complete this process.

Peterson stated, “In the past our weekly private track rentals have included pro racing teams from IHRA, NHRA, ADRL and the newly formed Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association cars. With continued support from these teams in addition to the championship drag racing and weekly events that we offer we deemed it necessary to ensure that US 131 Motorsports Park retains the reputation of being one of the smoothest tracks in the industry and these improvements will ensure that.”

Please visit www.us131msp.com to view US 131 Motorsports Park’s 2010 schedule of events.

NHRA NEWS: NHRA AND AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCE EXTENSION OF CURRENT MULTI-FACETED RELATIONSHIP

Adds title rights to NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing
Series event in St Louis; AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest
Nationals

GLENDORA, Calif. (March 29, 2010) - NHRA and the
Automobile Club of Southern California announced today
that they have extended and added to their landmark
relationship, encompassing many facets of NHRA's
business, including museum, safety, race and track
sponsorships. In addition to extending its current
involvement, the Automobile Club of Southern
California has expanded its sponsorship to include
title rights of the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest
Nationals at Gateway International Raceway outside St.
Louis.

"Our association with the Automobile Club of Southern
California is very special," said Tom Compton,
president, NHRA. "Their deep involvement with the
NHRA has an impact on nearly every part of our
business from the grassroots level all the way to the
NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Words simply
can't describe our appreciation for their support and
I want to personally thank Tom McKernan and his team
for recognizing the value of association with NHRA."

"We're pleased to see this relationship grow the way
it has over the past 16 years, especially now that we
are expanding to include some of our other motor
clubs, such as AAA Missouri, which serves the area
around Gateway International Raceway," said Tom
McKernan, Auto Club CEO. "There is a close alignment
between the objectives of the Auto Club and AAA
Missouri, and those of the NHRA. We each place a
premium on quality service, and we leverage our brand
and resources to promote automotive safety on the
track and in the community."

The relationship also includes naming rights for Auto
Club Raceway at Pomona, entitlement rights of the
Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals
held at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, sponsorship of
the Auto Club "Road to the Future" award annually
recognizing the sport's professional rookie of the
year, presenting sponsorship of the Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum, and presenting sponsorship of the
popular California Hot Rod Reunion held at Auto Club
Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. In addition,
Automobile Club of Southern California is presenting
sponsor of the NHRA Safety Safari and the NHRA Drags:
Street Legal Style presented by AAA.

Its naming rights at the historic Auto Club Raceway at
Pomona also affords Automobile Club of Southern
California presenting sponsorship of the Top
Eliminator Club for each of the two national events
that NHRA conducts at the raceway.

The Automobile Club of Southern California involvement
with NHRA spans 16 years, beginning in 1994 as sponsor
of the National Junior Dragster competition, quickly
followed in 1995 with presenting sponsorship of the
California Hot Rod Reunion. A year later, in 1996,
Auto Club began sponsoring the "Road to the Future"
award, which first started to recognize future stars
of the sport and later became the official award to
recognize NHRA's top rookie performer.

The Automobile Club of Southern California has
maintained title rights of the final race of the
season, the Automobile Club of Southern California
NHRA Finals, since 1999. In 2004, the company became
the presenting sponsor of the Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum. Finally, in 2006, Auto Club
added naming rights to Auto Club Raceway at Pomona and
presenting sponsorship of the NHRA Safety Safari and
NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style.

Lucas Oil rider Arana runner-up at 4-Wide Nationals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 29) -- Hector Arana, rider of the Lucas Oil Buell, didn't let a day-long rain delay slow him down as he ended Monday the runner up of the inaugural NHRA 4-Wide Nationals.

"It was very interesting and something new," Arana said of the first-ever four-wide race. "I feel like I did quite well. It was fun and challenging."

Arana was in a final-round quad with Matt Smith, Steve Johnson, and Michael Phillips. The defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champ got off the starting line just after Smith, but never was able to catch up.

Smith won the race with a 6.937-second pass 189.84 mph, with Arana right behind with a 7.000 at 190.92 mph.

"I didn't get the win but I did get second," Arana said. "This Lucas Oil bike performed great. (Lucas Oil Pro Stock driver) Larry Morgan did the job on our motors to get everything going.

"I want to thank all the fans, especially the ones who came back today to support us."

Up next for Arana and the Lucas Oil Buell is the 23rd annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park April 9-11.

Update: The services will be held Saturday April 3 at Kenworthy Funeral Home, 269 Frederick St. Hanover, PA 17331.  Start time is 10am till who knows?  I imagine there will be quite a gathering of friends and family, so it could be 2 - 3 hours in length.  After the services, we will be having a get together, to remember Porky and celebrate his life.  That location has yet to be determined.

ESPN2 SCHEDULES MONDAY SHOW FOR RAIN-DELAYED NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

CONCORD, N.C. -- ESPN2's continuation of coverage of the rain-delayed NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway has been scheduled for Monday at 12:30 p.m. (ET). The 30-min. show will feature the final rounds in Top Fuel and Funny Car and the second round and final of Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle competition at the first NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event to feature racing in four lanes instead of two.
NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD, Monday, March 29, 12:30-1 p.m. (ET)

RAIN POSTPONES NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS UNTIL MONDAY

CONCORD, N.C. – Persistent rain showers and a forecast for more severe weather throughout the evening Sunday forced NHRA officials to postpone the completion of the inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to Monday at zMAX Dragway.

Top Fuel and Funny Car competitors completed two rounds of racing before the rain started to fall just past 2 p.m. (ET) at the first NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event to feature racing in four lanes instead of the traditional two. One round of racing was completed in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Racing will resume Monday, weather permitting, at 10 a.m. with the continuation of several classes of racing in the Lucas Oil Series. The Top Fuel and Funny Car final rounds will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the second round of Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Final rounds for Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle will be completed at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Top qualifier Cory McClenathan, Doug Kalitta, Antron Brown and local favorite Doug Herbert, from nearby Lincolnton, will decide the Top Fuel final. In Funny Car, 14-time world champ John Force, his daughter Ashley Force Hood, Matt Hagan and Ron Capps will race for the Wally at the historic event.

Series leader Mike Edwards, Gainesville winner Jason Line and Phoenix runner-up Bob Yonke are among those still in contention in Pro Stock eliminations. Top qualifier Jeg Coughlin was upset in the first round, along with Greg Anderson, who set a national speed record during qualifying.

Four of the top-five points leaders in Pro Stock Motorcycle were upset in the first round. Defending series champ Hector Arana, top qualifier Matt Smith and past Charlotte winner Steve Johnson are among the two-wheel racers who advanced to the second round.

Lucas and Stoffer look to Lone Star State

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 28) -- The inaugural NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway didn't exactly go as planned for GEICO Powersports drag racers Morgan Lucas and Karen Stoffer as both were eliminated from competition in Sunday's opening round.

Lucas lined up his 8,000-horsepower GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster first against Cory McClenathan, Brandon Bernstein, and Rhonda Hartman-Smith but never had much of a chance to race them as his brilliant yellow and black rail was engulfed in tire smoke almost immediately after he stepped on the accelerator.

Although Lucas pedaled his machine in an attempt to regain traction, McClenathan and Hartman-Smith were quickly pulling away, advancing to the next round with a 3.799 at 319.14 mph and a 4.630 at 258.32 mph, respectively. Lucas drifted through with a 7.964 at 83.31 mph.

"We can't make any excuses," Lucas said. "We didn't get the tune-up right. We're a better team than this. That's all there is to it at this point. It's time to get back where we need to be.

"We're going to study our data and get the car back how it was. We're going to focus on getting our stuff for the future ready, and not necessarily right now."

The entire weekend also was a bit of a struggle for Stoffer and her GEICO Powersports Suzuki team. After qualifying 13th on the grid with a 6.992 at 191.32 mph, she couldn't muster up enough of a run to advance out of her first-round foursome. Instead, Hector Arana (6.897 at 192.22 mph) and David Hope (7.040 at 187.73 mph) moved on with Stoffer's 7.314 at 167.30 mph leaving her third in the grouping.

"We're frustrated," Stoffer said. "Frustrated but not down. We're learning a new power curve with these bigger motors and maybe we had a better start in Gainesville than we should have. That's a premier track that's very seasoned and although this place is awesome, it's definitely not as good a track for the bikes as Gainesville.

"It doesn't sound like much when you say we're running a 107 cubic inch engine versus the 101 cubic inch motor we used to have but it's actually very different. The torque this new motor puts out is phenomenal and we're still learning how to get the power to the track."

Stoffer also changed her riding style in the off-season, which adds another variable to the mix.

"I changed things up to avoid the red light problem we had in the past," Stoffer said. "So I'm riding differently, we have a new power curve to learn, and then we come here and have to figure out this four-wide racing and we only get one pass in each lane. It seems like we were going in several different directions.

"It's time to regroup, take what we can out of the runs we made here, and move on to Houston."

Next up is the 23rd annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, which runs from April 9-11.

Despite strong outing, Troxel misses out on Charlotte win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 28) -- Driver Melanie Troxel and the R2B2 Dodge Charger Funny Car are in a frustrating spot coming out of the inaugural NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway.

During Sunday's eliminations, Troxel had her best reaction time of the season (.084 seconds) and the car ran a 4.129-second pass at 305.49 mph -- the team's second best elapsed time of the season. But despite car and driver doing everything right, it still wasn't enough to advance to the second round.

"We can't be overly disappointed but we wanted to win that round," Troxel said. "We need to improve a little if we're going to be competitive out there."

Out of Troxel's foursome, Ron Capps, who ran a 4.032 at 313.80 mph, and Gainesville winner Tim Wilkerson, who went 4.079 at 299.40 mph, were the two drivers to advance.

Even after bowing out earlier than they had hoped, Troxel said her Roger Burgess-owned team remains hopeful and spirits are high in the pit. They are at the point where they are dissecting their laps tying to find a fraction of a second here or there to be able to make passes in the range of a 4.09 seconds or quicker.

"We're making progress, so we're not going to beat ourselves up too much right now," Troxel said. "We're still a nickel away from really being in the hunt. As a team we're going to have to knuckle down and find that little bit of performance that's holding us back."

Troxel said that it's hard to be patient because not only is there the desire to win race, but the R2B2 team wants to turn on the win light in order to attract more attention from sponsors who can help them race the entire season schedule. The group has an eight-race contract with California-based In-N-Out Burger.

"Realistically we're not in a bad place," Troxel said. "This is a car and equipment that did not run at all in 2009. We're in a good place and have great chemistry, but we still want to go out and win every round.

"We feel pressure to try to get sponsorship to fill the 13 races we don't have funding for. It's just going to take a little more time to get that turned around. Hopefully someone will see the potential in this team and what we can do representing a company. Hopefully they will step on board and give us the opportunity."

Up next, Troxel will pull double duty at the 23rd annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, which runs from April 9-11.
