NHRA REPOSITIONS TWO RACES ON 2010 FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES SCHEDULE

HOUSTON, FIRST LAS VEGAS EVENTS SWAP DATES IN 2010
NHRA FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES SCHEDULE

GLENDORA, Calif. (Aug. 31, 2009) - NHRA announced
today that it has repositioned two events on its 2010
NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule.

The O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston has been
moved to the April 9-11 weekend, exchanging places
with the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip
at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which will now be held on
April 16-18. The move was necessary due to NASCAR's
anticipated 2010 schedule.

"We certainly want the fans in our area to be able to
take advantage of all the great entertainment
opportunities that the world of motorsports has to
offer in the great state of Texas," said Seth Angel,
general manager of Houston Raceway Park.

Said LVMS President Chris Powell: "Shifting the NHRA
Summitracing.com Nationals back one week works well
for everyone. Our spring race is one of the marquee
stops in drag racing each year, and it's hard to top
Las Vegas weather in mid-April. So we're happy to
accommodate this move by the NHRA."

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA is the primary
sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the
United States. It presents 24 national events through
its NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. NHRA has
80,000 members and 140 member tracks. The
NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series
provide competition opportunities for drivers of all
levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by
offering the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, NHRA
Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal
Style presented by AAA. NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag
Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17.

Three races to be run, three championships to be settled

Simply put, after seven Nitro Jam national events, the 2009 IHRA season is heading for a thrilling three-race shoot-out, beginning with the Amalie Oil North American Nationals at New England Dragway the weekend of September 11-13, 2009.

The event, presented by Wolverine Boots and featuring the New England Dodge Dealers Night of Fire, will provide the backdrop for the stretch run that will determine the 2009 champions of Top Fuel, Pro Modified and Elite Motorsports Pro Stock.

It’s now or never for those with championship aspirations, and heading into New Hampshire the points battles in all three IHRA professional classes are extremely close.

In Top Fuel, 2007 class champion Bruce Litton has seen his lead over rookie Del Cox Jr., shrink from 84 to 15 points in the span of two races, and the stage is now set for a knock-down, drag-out brawl for the crown. This is sure to be one of the toughest battles for Top Fuel supremacy in recent memory.

The Pro Mod chase is just as exciting, as class veteran Ed Hoover and defending champion Kenny Lang have traded the top spot on the points list all season long. A victory at the previous race at Martin, Michigan, coupled with Hoover’s early exit, has given Lang a 56-point lead with three races to go.

Not to be outdone, fans of the sport’s quickest and fastest factory hot rods also have something to cheer about. In Elite Motorsports Pro Stock, Frank Gugliotta has a 46-point edge over rival John Montecalvo. With Montecalvo, and others, so close behind, however, Gugliotta’s lead could quickly disappear, so fans are gearing up for a fight to the finish.

There’s lots of excitement on the sportsman front as well, as there are still numerous chances left to qualify for the “Tournament of Champions,” the new world championship system for sportsman racers.

This season, Nitro Jam national events, as well as select other events, were considered individual tournaments, with the winner of each tournament getting a spot in a field of competitors who will race each other for the world championship at the end of the year. This race, which will take place during the World Finals at Rockingham in October, will crown national champions as well as the national top 10 in each class.

The weekend’s on-track action will be bolstered by the addition of teams representing the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association.

“We are grateful to Aaron Polburn and Skooter Peaco of the IHRA and Feld Motor Sports for recognizing our efforts and inviting us to this event,” said organization president John Mazzorana. ”New England Dragway is an excellent track, and we have many members who love racing there.”

NEOPMA competitors will divert from their normal format of two classes -Nitrous/Aspirated and Blower/Turbo – and run one all-inclusive class. All racing will be done on the quarter-mile.

Qualifying and eliminations for NEOPMA will take place Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with the IHRA professional categories, including a round during the popular “Night of Fire” session Saturday evening.

Also racing alongside the IHRA’s regular and sportsman competitors will be the National Speed Association. The NSA is a heads up, Pro Stock asphalt-snowmobile drag racing circuit. These two-stroke sleds make over 260 horsepower and can rip down the quarter-mile in eight seconds at speeds of over 150 miles per hour.

As with the NEOPMA, the NSA riders will compete in conjunction with the professional rounds.

Prior to all of that, however, homage will be paid to some very special Americans. The first day of this event is September 11th, a date that struck the lives of every citizen in the United States and will always be remembered with sorrow.

In an effort to honor those who gave everything on that tragic day in 2001, the teams at the International Hot Rod Association and New England Dragway will take the opportunity to thank the men and women who continue to unselfishly give of themselves day-in and day-out by celebrating “Freedom Friday.”

Members of any military, police, fire, medical, and rescue unit will receive free entry during Friday’s opening day of competition, with a special ceremony honoring those brave Americans taking place prior to the 7 p.m. start of professional qualifying.

Capping Saturday’s professional qualifying and New England Dodge Dealers Night of Fire festivities will be an appearance by the one and only “King of Quake,” Mr. Bob Motz himself, who will rock the East Coast with the kind of explosive sensory overload only his world-famous jet-powered 20,000 horsepower W999B Kenworth can create.

TOP SEED ARANA LEADS PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE COMPETITORS
IN 19TH ANNUAL RINGERS GLOVES PRO BIKE BATTLE

CLERMONT, Ind. - Hector Arana will headline a special
eight-rider field from the No. 1 qualifying position
as he is seeking his first victory in the Ringers
Gloves Pro Bike Battle at O'Reilly Raceway Park at
Indianapolis on Sept. 5th. The special bonus event for
NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle competitors will be held
during the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
presented by Lucas Oil, the world's most prestigious
drag race.

The total race day purse for the 19th annual Ringers
Gloves Pro Bike Battle is $61,000. The winner will
earn a $25,000 bonus from Ringers Gloves. Any rider
who can win the Battle and the Mac Tools U.S.
Nationals will earn a $10,000 'Double-Up' bonus from
the NHRA.

The Battle runner-up will earn $10,000. The two
semifinalists will earn $6,000 each, while the four
first-round finishers will earn $3,500 apiece.
Drivers accumulated points for the Ringers Gloves Pro
Bike Battle at 17 NHRA national events between last
year's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals through last weekend's
Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near
Reading, Pa. A $1,000 bonus was awarded to the No. 1
qualifier at each of those races.

Arana, who is making his fifth start in the bonus
event and first since 1997, claimed the No. 1 seed by
earning four No. 1 qualifying positions during the
Battle series.

Arana will meet sophomore Battle contender Matt
Guidera in the opening round. In other first round
pairings, three-time winner Andrew Hines will face
1991 runner-up Steve Johnson, while defending winner
Eddie Kraweic will race 2002 winner Craig Treble. In
the final pairing, four-time Battle participant Matt
Smith will race Karen Stoffer, who is making her third
start in the special bonus event.

Other past winners include GT Tonglet, Reggie Showers,
Shawn Gann, Antron Brown, Matt Hines, John Myers and
James Bernard.

Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle rounds are scheduled
for 1:15, 5:30 and 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 5.

MORGAN LUCAS HOPES HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE GIVES HIM THE
EDGE AT MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS

CLERMONT, Ind. - Morgan Lucas grew up in Southern
California, but racing's lure eventually pulled him
back to the state where his parents' successful oil
products business first blossomed. Today, Lucas Oil
Products is highly visible throughout the world and
especially in Indiana, where the company is not only
involved in promoting world class auto racing events,
but is also a major player as sponsor of the home
field for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, Lucas Oil
Stadium.

Partly due to ease his heavy travel schedule and
mostly to be near a hotbed of racing activity year
round, Lucas relocated to the Circle City from the
sunny West Coast a few years back, and now he feels
more a part of Indianapolis than ever.

"I definitely consider Indy home," Lucas said. "It
feels like home, as much as anything can when you
travel as much as we do. My family is from Indiana so
this has always been the place we've called home.
We're from here. Since my folks signed on as sponsors
of the Colts stadium in downtown, it's really raised
the profile of our company, especially in
Indianapolis. When you meet people and tell them your
name the immediate question is, 'Are you related to
the people that have the stadium?' It's like, 'yeah,
that's mom and dad.' My parents are socialites now.
It's pretty funny."

With two race victories this season in his GEICO
Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster, Lucas is hoping to add
another to his win column at the 55th annual Mac Tools
U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, Sept. 2-7 at
O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The
tradition-rich race will be showcased during more than
10 hours of coverage on ESPN2 HD and it is the final
regular season race in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag
Racing Series before the top 10 fields in each pro
category are set for NHRA's six-race championship
playoff, the Countdown to 1.

"Indy is always a very hectic weekend for us," Lucas
said. "There are more demands on my time than usual
and you kind of just have to put your head down and
plow through it all. The race itself means so much to
drag racers. It's certainly one you want to win at
some point in your career. Living here, it takes on
even more significance because all my friends and
family are there wishing us well. Plus, everyone from
the shop can come out with their families and enjoy a
weekend at the races."

Lucas recently gave his parents - Forrest and
Charlotte - a very special weekend in Brainerd, Minn.,
when he claimed a victory there from the No. 1
qualifying position. He says the win, his second of
the season, is one that he is extremely proud of.

"The Brainerd race was so satisfying because we just
out-performed everyone," Lucas said. "There were no
lucky breaks, red lights, people smoking their tires
or blowing up; we just beat everyone because we had
the best car that day. It was a dream weekend with mom
and dad there and being a Lucas Oil race. I don't know
if I'll ever be able to top that."

Lucas now sits sixth in the Top Fuel points order and
seems to have some momentum going as the 18-race NHRA
regular season is winding down and the start of the
six-race Countdown to 1 is just a few weeks away. At
the beginning of the season he wanted to race
consistently enough to win a race or two and make the
Countdown to 1. Now, with both of those goals checked
off his list, his competition must consider him a
threat to win at any time, as well as a contender for
the championship.

"We're not setting any more goals this year," Lucas
said. "We're just going to do the best we can every
race and see where it falls. I don't want the guys to
feel like we have to push it any more than we already
have been. Everything's working so good right now.
There's no need to change the way we're doing things."

Other Top Fuel favorites at the Mac Tools U.S.
Nationals include series points leader Antron Brown,
who has five victories this season in his Matco Tools
dragster and has already clinched the No. 1 seed for
the playoffs. Seven-time U.S. Nationals winner Tony
Schumacher, who has won this race the last three
seasons in his U.S. Army dragster, will try to tie
legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' record of eight Indy
wins. Three-time Indy winner Larry Dixon and two-time
winner Cory McClenathan are always strong performers
at this event.

Clay Millican and Joe Hartley will have a personal
one-on-one battle going to secure the 10th and final
spot in the Coutndown to 1. Millican currently sits in
the 10th spot and leads hard-charging Hartley by three
points.

continues at noon and 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5

TONY PEDREGON HOPES TO FINISH REGULAR SEASON STRONG
WITH A MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS TROPHY IN HAND

CLERMONT, Ind. - Two-time NHRA Funny Car world
champion Tony Pedregon loves the view from where he is
sitting as he prepares for the world's most
prestigious drag race.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series points
leader with three victories this season, Pedregon is
ready to make the final regular season charge in his
Wicked Quick/Q-Horsepower Chevy Impala and position
himself as the top seed in his category for the
six-race Countdown to 1, NHRA's championship playoffs.

It's a statement that Pedregon can make comfortably
now. Two races ago there may have been a little
hesitation. After suddenly splitting with longtime
crew chief Dickie Venables just days prior to the race
in Brainerd, Minn., Pedregon was faced with a rush of
uncertainty for his race program. However, his team
rallied behind new car chief Tony Shortall and the
help of brother Cruz' crew chief Rahn Tobler, and won
the race in Brainerd. A semifinal finish at Reading
followed. Crisis averted.

In a blur, Pedregon went from thinking his season
might be over, to a deep second wind that has lifted
his team's determination to finish off what has been a
stellar season.

"We've had a little bit of drama," Pedregon said. "It
was a new challenge and some unchartered ground for me
as a team owner. Anytime you have a change you have
that fear of getting out of your comfort zone. But
then we won Brainerd and that was probably the biggest
emotional victory in my career. Now, the real work
lies ahead."

Pedregon will try to win a race that has so far eluded
him during his successful career and solidify his
position as the NHRA regular season Funny Car champion
at the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented
by Lucas Oil at historic O'Reilly Raceway Park at
Indianapolis. The tradition-rich race, which will be
held Sept. 2-7 and will be showcased during more than
10 hours of coverage on ESPN2 HD, is the final regular
season race in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing
Series before the top 10 fields in each pro category
are set for NHRA's six-race championship playoff, the
Countdown to 1.

"At Indy there's a lot at stake," Pedregon said. "We
want to have the points lead at the end of that event
and get the 20 bonus points going into the Countdown
because that takes some of the pressure off. I
haven't won that race, so I think that would be a
great way to finish off this regular season by winning
that one. I am to the point in my career where I'd
like to get that done. I do believe we have the
potential to win it."

Pedregon has watched both of his brothers win the
event - Cruz on three occasions and Frank in 1999. He
has been the top qualifier there twice, including last
season, and has only advanced to the final round at
the event one time, when he was runner-up to Whit
Bazemore in 2001.

For a guy that's won 43 races, two world championship
titles and visited the winner's circle at just about
every track on the circuit, even he's a bit perplexed.

"I am not superstitious at all," Pedregon said. "I
think the biggest challenge with that event is that it
falls at a time of the year when you have warm
conditions. With all the teams I have raced with over
the years we have never really been a team that won
races with a hot track setup. I believe at this time I
have the best race car and the best chance I have ever
had to get it done."

Pedregon is well aware of the event's history and
status in the world of motorsports. He says he doesn't
lose any sleep over the fact that he has never won the
race, but he admits it is a race that he would
certainly love to win before he's through.

"I really believe the ultimate for any driver is to
win the championship," Pedregon said. "But if you had
to single out any one race, the U.S. Nationals would
be the one. It has the most history, is the biggest
paying and the most prestigious. It is our Indy 500."

Neither of Pedregon's top two championship rivals -
Ron Capps nor Ashley Force Hood - have won the race
either. In fact, only three drivers in the current top
10 - Tim Wilkerson, John Force and Cruz Pedregon -
have celebrated a victory at Indy.

Pedregon says he and his team are going to employ the
same race routine at the U.S. Nationals that has led
them to wins at Chicago, Englishtown and Brainerd this
season. He'll also sprinkle in some strategy that's
geared just for the Big Go.

"My approach to this event will be the same," Pedregon
said. "I will rely on my experience. We want to pace
ourselves because it is a very long week and the goal
is to race smart. You have to have a good start on
Friday in the first qualifying session. That run is
very critical and really sets the tone for the
weekend. If you can get solidly in the field, it takes
some of the pressure off and you can start working on
your race day setup. If you don't do well on Friday,
then it seems like you are behind the rest of the
weekend."

As for the Countdown to 1, which begins Sept. 18 at
zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C., Pedregon says he
will race every round like it's his last one.

"Our strategy for the Countdown is the same philosophy
we used in 2007," Pedregon said. "You go into it like
there is no margin for error on any run. We try to
press the whole time and run as hard as we can and
never hold anything back. We race wide open and full
throttle and the rest is destiny."

RICKIE JONES LOOKING TO KEEP DREAM SEASON ALIVE AT
PRESTIGIOUS MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS

CLERMONT, Ind. - Rickie Jones can't remember a time
when he wasn't at the race track. The son of noted
race car builder Rick Jones, Rickie always tagged
along with his dad as he would visit drag strips
across the country to make sure the Pro Stock and Pro
Mod cars that he built were meeting the racers'
expectations.

Eventually Rickie started working in his dad's shop
and then he was bit by the racing bug himself. He
started with his own Junior Dragster and now as he's
on the verge of making the Countdown to 1, NHRA's
playoffs, in a 200-mph Pro Stock car. Every now and
then, the younger Jones has to take a step back and
make sure this is all real.

"This is a dream come true," the 22-year-old Jones
said. "At the beginning of the season we set our goals
and they were to try and qualify for every race and
make it into the top 10."

His mission is nearly accomplished.

In his second season of competition in the NHRA Full
Throttle Drag Racing Series, Jones is ninth in the Pro
Stock points order and he has qualified for every race
so far. He is 27 points ahead of legendary Warren
Johnson in the standings and 36 in front of 11th-place
Johnny Gray, who posted a runner-up finish two weeks
ago in Reading, Pa.

"I am really excited, but a little nervous at the same
time going to Indy," Jones said. "I want to hold on to
the position we're in. We've been in the top 10 the
whole year and I don't want to lose it now."

Jones will make his final stand for a berth in the
NHRA playoffs in his Quarter-Max/RJ Race Cars Dodge
Stratus at the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
presented by Lucas Oil, Sept. 2-7 at historic O'Reilly
Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The tradition-rich race
will be showcased during more than 10 hours of
coverage on ESPN2 HD and it is the final regular
season race in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing
Series before the top 10 fields in each pro category
are set for NHRA's six-race championship playoff, the
Countdown to 1.

Jones has been praised by his peers for his tenacity
at the starting line with a stellar reaction time
average of .024. He says that statistic is no
accident.

"We don't have a top-half car," said Jones, who has
averaged an 11th place qualifying position, yet earned
semifinal round appearances at Gainesville, Denver and
Sonoma this season. "You know when you go up there to
race that you are going to have to try and put a
holeshot on your opponent and try to beat them that
way. I put a lot of pressure on myself to do that and
I spend a lot of time working on my reaction times
with a simulator."

The one thing the simulator doesn't emulate is the
talent in the other lane. NHRA Pro Stock racing is one
of the most competitive forms of racing in all of
motorsports. With talented drivers like series points
leader Jeg Coughlin, three-time world champ Greg
Anderson and six-time champ Johnson in the field - all
three multiple-time U.S. Nationals winners - Jones
knows that he has his work cut out for him. He says as
a rookie he would get big eyes when he pulled into the
staging lanes and knew he was going to race against
Johnson, widely known as the "Professor of Pro Stock."
Now he says the only thing that makes him wide-eyed is
seeing his win-light come on.

"I think I am over the holy cow feeling," Jones said.
"I wasn't afraid my first year, but maybe just a
little in awe that I was actually racing door to door
with some of my heroes of the sport. Now I don't have
as much of the wow factor when I go to the starting
line. I am just focused on cutting a great light and
trying to beat these guys."

And he'll need to beat at least two of his heroes at
Indy if he's going to make it into the playoffs. But
he has a good feeling. Last year at Indy Jones had the
best moment of his rookie season at the Big Go. He
qualified 11th out of 28 cars and won his first round
meeting over veteran Ron Krisher.

Yep, you guessed it - he won that round on a holeshot.

"Last year just to qualify was special because there
are so many cars trying to make that race and you know
everyone brings the best they've got there," Jones
said. "After we qualified on Sunday, I spent about
three hours signing autographs and thanking the fans
for their support. It was crazy. After we won that
first round there was so much excitement in the air.
It was really awesome. I love Indy and I am really
looking forward to getting back there."

STEVE JOHNSON NEEDS SOME MORE INDY MAGIC TO MAKE
COUNTDOWN CHARGE AT MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS

CLERMONT, Ind. - On two occasions Steve Johnson has
literally come out of nowhere to win the Pro Stock
Motorcycle trophy at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the
world's most prestigious drag race.

In 2005, he won amid some controversy after a
television replay was needed to verify that his bike
actually crossed the finish line first in his final
round meeting with Matt Smith. Last year no such
technology was needed as he sped to the upset victory
on his Snap-on Tools / Wyotech Suzuki over heavy
pre-race favorite Andrew Hines.

The often zany and colorfully-candid Johnson just
seems to find a way to rise to the occasion on the
biggest stage. He'll need to tap into that power this
year at the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
presented by Lucas Oil, Sept. 2-7 at O'Reilly Raceway
Park at Indianapolis. The tradition-rich race will be
showcased during more than 10 hours of coverage on
ESPN2 HD and it is the final regular season race in
the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series before the
top 10 fields in each pro category are set for NHRA's
six-race championship playoff, the Countdown to 1.

Johnson enters the race sitting just outside the top
10 in the point standings, two points behind Karen
Stoffer. A trio of first round losses to rookie Doug
Horne during the last three events has kicked Johnson
from a comfortable eighth-place position in the
standings and put him on the hot seat as he enters the
final race of the regular season.

With three spots available for five riders, Reading
runner-up Michael Phillips, Shawn Gann and Brainerd
runner-up Junior Pippin also will be trying to secure
berths in the championship playoffs at Indy. However,
Johnson says his primary focus during the weekend will
be trying to earn more points than GEICO Powersports
Suzuki rider Stoffer.

"It's between me and Karen really," Johnson said. "We
don't have the steam to keep up with her in
qualifying. We'll need some luck in the first round."

For Johnson, it is all about the challenge. He is up
for it. Especially at this event, the Super Bowl of
drag racing.

Johnson says the week is like no other: "Indy is an
event where you get five hours of sleep a night, give
your seat up on the plane to a soldier, find a hotel
with a treadmill, eat plain oatmeal and turkey
sandwiches all week, take the sponsors out for dinner
at St. Elmo's Steak House, find a couple of spare
Vance & Hines engines, make sure your sponsors are
happy even if you are struggling and hopefully find a
friend or two that will do anything to help you out
during that crazy week."

He is very proud to call himself a two-time Mac Tools
U.S. Nationals champion.

"It's a time in a racer's life that he or she just has
to do it," Johnson said. "It's something that when it
happens - the win - your stock rises. For some, just a
little, but for others, a ton. But in either case the
magic is when you have to flip a coin on a jetting
call (in the tune-up) and it's the right one and you
win the race."

And the other magic of Indy is taking the time to
catch up with old friends.

"The last year (NHRA founder) Wally Parks went to the
U.S. Nationals he and (board members) Dick Wells and
Dallas (Gardner) and three golf carts full of people
came to the motorcycle side of the track," Johnson
said. "I didn't have a lounge or a big rig, but I had
a card table, chairs and an ice chest. Wally sat with
me and talked about bikes and where I thought the
bikes would go. We talked about the salt flats and my
school programs. When he left that day, I was so
proud that he knew me, but it showed all the
motorcycle teams how diverse this man was. He always
listened...even to Steve Johnson."

Johnson says another successful week at Indy would be
a cure for his season to date, which has featured only
one semifinal finish and two quarterfinal efforts.

"This season has been a huge struggle for sure,"
Johnson said. "We have all of the ingredients that we
need to be successful, but for some reason right now
they aren't mixing right. But we have a reputation of
being a second-half team. We'll see what happens."

While his personal season hasn't been going as
planned, as president of PRO2, an organization that
promotes motorcycle drag racing on the professional
level, Johnson is on cloud nine.

"Our class is really great right now," Johnson said.
"Seeing Junior (Pippin) and so many Buells doing so
well says a lot for our class. It shows the guys and
girls at home as well as the fans and corporate
America that anyone can win these races."

Johnson is also qualified to participate in the
Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, a special bonus event
that will be held Sept. 5 for the eight best riders
from the last 17 Pro Stock Motorcycle races. He will
face Hines in the first round. A winner's share of
$25,000 will be on the line in the special event that
current series points leader and defending world
champion Eddie Kraweic won last year on his Screamin'
Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.

EVENT HISTORY: The most historic and prestigious event
in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, the Mac
Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil has been
contested annually since 1955. Originally known as
"The Nationals" and first held at an abandoned
airstrip in Great Bend, Kan., the event made stops at
Kansas City, Mo., Oklahoma City and Detroit before
eventually moving to O'Reilly Raceway Park at
Indianapolis in 1961. Past winners include "Big Daddy"
Don Garlits, an eight-time winner in Top Fuel; Shirley
Muldowney, 1982 Top Fuel winner; Don "The Snake"
Prudhomme, a seven-time winner and one of a handful of
drivers to win the event in both Top Fuel and Funny
Car; and Bob Glidden, the legendary Pro Stock driver
who dominated the race by advancing to the final round
in 13 consecutive seasons from 1977-'89. The Indiana
native won the event a record nine times. It is the
only major motorsports event to be contested on Labor
Day. In 2004 the event celebrated its 50th anniversary
in memorable fashion with spectacular racing witnessed
by one of the biggest crowds in NHRA history. Once
again this year the regular season of the Full
Throttle Countdown to the Championship concludes at
the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil so

TRACK HISTORY: In 1958, led by Tom Binford, Frank
Dickie, Rodger Ward and Howard Fieber, 15
Indianapolis-area businessmen and racing professionals
invested $5,000 each to fund the development of what
would become O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.
The group purchased a 267-acre farm about seven miles
from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and developed a
multipurpose auto racing facility. The original
intention in creating O'Reilly Raceway Park at
Indianapolis was to design a 15-turn, 2.5-mile road
course. Nearly as an afterthought, and as an insurance
measure against economic problems, the investment
group decided to incorporate a quarter-mile drag strip
into the long straightaway of the 2.5-mile road course
design. Constructed with assistance from the NHRA, the
drag strip was the first of the three courses to be
completed, with the facility's first event held on the
strip in the fall of 1960. During the 1960 U.S.
Nationals in Detroit, a handshake agreement between
Binford and NHRA founder Wally Parks promised that the
event would move to O'Reilly Raceway Park at
Indianapolis in 1961. The historic three-year pact was
signed and sealed under a tree in Detroit Dragway's
pits, and O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis
eventually became the home of NHRA's biggest annual
event. The NHRA purchased the entire facility in 1979.
The first major improvement came in 1983 with the
construction and dedication of Parks Tower, the
four-story drag strip tower. In 1998, new grandstands,
suites and a tower complex on the front straightaway
were completed at the oval track at a cost of nearly
$2.5 million, which included the repaving of the
entire oval surface as part of a three-phase facility
improvement project. In 2001, NHRA and O'Reilly
Raceway Park constructed a new drag strip racing
surface, replacing the strip with a 660-foot concrete
pad and laying new asphalt on the remainder of the
track and shutdown area. Prior to the 2003 Mac Tools
U.S. Nationals, eight new luxury suites were added
along the top of the west-side grandstands of the drag
strip, giving fans a unique perspective of the action
on the famed quarter-mile track. In 2006, new soft
barrier walls were added to the oval. In 2007, the
track announced its first track entitlement with
O'Reilly Auto Parts. The track - formerly known as
Indianapolis Raceway Park - is now known as O'Reilly
Raceway Park at Indianapolis. During the last
offseason, a new main track office building was
constructed near the track entrance.

is the one race we all want to win. Next to winning
the championship, it's the biggest accomplishment a
team can have in NHRA drag racing. I've been fortunate
enough to win twice on the bikes and Mike Ashley, our
team owner, won in Funny Car a few years back with
Brian (Corradi) and Mark (Oswald) calling the shots on
his Funny Car. We're having a great season so far and
hopefully we can be in the top three coming into Indy
for the Countdown (to the Championship). That's really
our goal, to be in the top three heading into
Charlotte. Tony (Schumacher) and Larry (Dixon) have
dominated Indy in Top Fuel this decade and hopefully
we can upset their U.S Nationals party and put this

8/30/09 Norwalk, OH – Three repeat winners re-established their dominance at Summit Motorsports Park outside Norwalk, Ohio this weekend as over 250 racing entries did battle at the Goodguys 8th DuPont Blue Suede Cruise. Steve Nichols (Funny Car), Darrell Wathen (B/GAS) and Sam Patrick (Nostalgia Gas) went home victorious for the second year in a row as racers enjoyed cool temperatures and an ultra-sticky racing surface which resulted in spectacular runs in both pro and sportsman classes. Rich Guasco’s “Pure Hell” and Dave Hough’s “Nanook” fuel altereds also gave the fans their money’s worth over the weekend coming to the line for a three-race match race which culminated in a thrilling Sunday climax run with Nanook’s 6.460 @ 198.79 defeating Pure Hell’s 6.475 @ 214.11! The crowd went wild!!!!

Nostalgia Funny Car action provided wild side by side action. Sunday’s final round between low qualifier Peter Gallen and Steve Nichols turned into the quickest side-by-side Nostalgia Funny Car race in the history of Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing. Gallen and his gorgeous “Poverty Stricken” ’74 Vega were quickest in every round of qualifying and eliminations and it appeared to be his race to lose. But his slightly tardy reaction times proved to be his undoing in the money round as he lost a heartbreaker on a holeshot to defending event champion Steve Nichols in the Mill Road Boys ’70 Camaro. Gallen and his team put on a show that will not soon be forgotten. His successive runs throughout the weekend were 6.048, 5.898, 5.919, 5.913 and 5.899 in the final.

Like Funny Car, the Nostalgia Top Fuel eliminations pitted the two fastest cars on the grounds in the final with Randy Bridges and car owner Joe Hendricks facing off against multi-time Goodguys event champion Howard Haight in Jim Didio’s New York based “Nitro-Diction” entry with Pete Jennings now serving as crew chief/consultant. Bridges and Hendricks have been on a roll since the Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals in Indy back in June and extended that momentum here in Norwalk taking their first-ever Goodguys Top Fuel win! They again set top speed of the meet when their car zipped to a 257mph speed to defeat the alcohol car of Bill Walls in round one. The final was close as both Bridges and Haight ran 240mph speeds but Bridges edged ahead late to take home the Goodguys hemi Oscar trophy.

In the 7.0 second index Pro Comp I Eliminator, Crawfordsville, Indiana’s Mark Vaught got his first Goodguys win as he and crew chief Keith “Rooman” Burgan ran just quick enough to get the popular win. The quickest run they could muster throughout Sunday’s eliminations was a semi-final 7.335 @ 195.06 over Don Slout who broke. They caught another lucky break in the final when #3 qualifier Don Slagle also broke, giving them their free pass to the spoils.
Owensboro, Kentucky’s Darrell Wathen tasted sweet victory again this year in B/GAS (8.50 index) running a near-perfect an 8.504 in the semis then an 8.507 in the final to defeat Paul Suloff who had trouble gaining traction.

Other winners included Chad Levan (Nostalgia Comp), Sam Patrick (Nostalgia Gas) and Pat McFadden (Hot Rod Eliminator), Ron Normann (Geezer Gasser) Brian Schimmel (1/8th mile Street Rod Shootout) and Kenny Edwards (1/8th mile Hot Rod Shootout).

HAROLD WILSON BREAKS SEVEN YEAR LOSING STREAK

(Commerce, GA – August 29) With one more Summit ET Series event to go, racers are turning out to show what they’ve got and defend their points standings. The day was surprisingly clear after a rainy week, and there was just enough breeze to make the dial-ins a challenge. Harold Wilson enjoyed his first victory in seven years with a Pro Class victory.

Phil Owens (Lithia Springs, GA) met points leader Jeremy Hancock (Commerce, GA) in the Super Pro finals, both driving ’05 M&M dragsters. Hancock left the line with a .016 green light, trumped by Owens’ .006 second reaction time. The two kept close to the finish line – Hancock finishing with a 4.95 ET on a 4.93 dial-in at 137.20 mph. Owens gained the win-light with a 4.83 second run on a 4.80 prediction at 134.47 mph, making for a .005 margin-of-victory and the closest final run of the night. Owens thanked his son Clint, “for helping me tonight.” Gainesville’s Joe Rampley was the semi-finalist in his ’05 Dragster.

Rickey Morris (Ellenwood, GA) appeared in his second consecutive Pro final, this time in an ’87 Corvette against Harold Wilson’s ’74 Nova (Winder, GA). Wilson’s chances were looking grim when he left the line with a .141 green light, followed by Morris’ .081 launch. However, Morris couldn’t catch Wilson at the top end, running a 6.48 on his 6.40 dial-in at 106.55 mph, while Wilson took the win with a .007 margin-of-victory, finishing with an 8.50 ET on an 8.49 dial-in at 79.72 mph. Wilson was grateful for the win: “I’ve finally broke my seven year losing streak!” Modestly, he credited his success to luck, but also thanked his wife Stormy for letting him race. John Norris of Royston, GA, took third place in his ’86 Camaro.

John Snapp (Conyers, GA) made it to the Sportsman final in his ’03 Durango, up against the last Summit ET race’s winner Mel Abney (Cumming, GA), in a ’67 Camaro. Snapp left the line first, with a handicap dial of 11.15 next to Abney’s quicker 8.45 dial-in. Snapp’s light was a favorable .008, Abney following with a .025 green light to catch up. Snapp closed in too quickly, breaking out by just .002 with an 11.14 ET at 61.52 mph, as Abney claimed victory running dead-on the dial at 83.74 mph. “This was a great day,” Abney said, “it’s the most fun I’ve had in a while.” Abney thanked his fellow racers, including his buddies J.D. Burford (Hot Rod winner of last week’s NMCA race at ZMAX) and Mike Puckett. Abney is now just 20 points behind points leader J.D. Burford (’07 Corvette – Greenville, SC), who ended his night in the semi-finals along with Allen Long (’85 Chevy Truck – Ballground, GA).

Michael Tlapa (Loganville, GA) and Jay “Bird” Rhyne (Athens, GA) were tonight’s Motorcycle finalists. Tlapa was set to leave first, with a 6.48 dial-in next to Rhyne’s 5.86 prediction, but launched his ’01 Hayabusa a bit too quickly, cutting a -.043 red light that automatically handed the win to Rhyne. Tlapa continued his run with a 6.40 ET at 114.10 mph, as Rhyne drove his ’82 Kawasaki’s victory run in 5.87 seconds at 115.07 mph. Rhyne was very proud of his Motorcycle success: “Can you say Jay Bird’s House of Speed?” The race was his first win on a new bike, for which he thanked Tim Sutton. Rhyne now leads the points by 130, sealing the deal for the ’09 Motorcycle championship. Jeff Shropshire (’08 Kawasaki – Dallas, GA) and Tommy Saxon (’81 Suzuki – Bogart, GA) were the semi-finalists.

Charlie Smith (10 – McDonough, GA) enjoyed his first win when he made it to the 8-12 Junior Dragster final against Alex Krause (11 – Peachtree City, GA). Smith had the handicap with a 13.07 prediction, and left the line first with a .090 green light. Krause, waiting with an 8.90 dial-in, left too quickly with a -.064 red light. Krause finished in 8.95 seconds at 70.91 mph, while Smith hit the top end in 13.11 seconds at 48.67 mph. Smith is now second in the points ranking, just 50 behind points leader Chris Bowden. Smith thanked his mom, dad and sister for their help during the race. He added the best part of the day was having both his track friends ( Austin and Alex) in the finals with him. Austin Carden (8 – McDonough, GA) was the semi-finalist.

It was an all-girls final in the 13-17 Junior Dragster class, with Kelsey Lynn (15 – Marietta, GA) against Bailey Denton (15 – McDonough, GA). The girls were dialed closely together, Lynn with a slightly slower 7.96 next to Denton’s 7.91 prediction. Denton left the line with a .099 green, while Lynn left with a detrimental .222 reaction time. Lynn finished the run too quickly, breaking out with a 7.95 ET at 82.67 mph, while Denton flashed the win-light with a 7.93 run at 80.77 mph. Denton has secured the top position in points, 150 ahead of the next place. Jennifer Jarrett (16 – Cartersville, GA) and Chase Mullinax (17 – Buford, GA) ended the day in the semi-finals.

Roger Weddle, Richard Potter, Jerry Weber, and Eric Johns took wins at the final Sunoco Race Fuels Championship Series Event on August 29th at Woodburn Dragstrip.  JDRL winners were Casey Ladd, Grace Presser, Alyssa Madison, and Justin Harmon.  Josh Wilson took the win in High School.  Ken Schaeffer and Alejandro Cisneros scored victories in the Les Schwab Tire Centers/Toyo Tires Sports Compact Challenge while Roger Wolff took top honors in the Street Bike Shootout.



With the conclusion of the 2009 Sunoco Race Fuels Championship Series, Woodburn Dragstrip is proud to recognize the track champions in each of these classes.  Dundee, OR racer, Roger Wolff, and Carlton, OR racer Derrick Jackson, earned their second consecutive championships in Motorcycle and Sportsman, respectively.  Estacada racer, Steve Stuart, earned a hard-fought championship in Pro.  Keizer racer, Gary Wargnier, and Happy Valley racer Mike McManus, were tied in points for the Super Pro championship.  The first tie-breaker is the greatest number of rounds won, thus giving the championship to Gary Wargnier who had a 35 to 34 advantage.

Josh Wilson from Vancouver, WA earned the victory in High School and as a result was tied with  Astoria’s Avery Peterson in point total.  By a margin of 10 to 9, Josh Wilson is crowned High School Champion.

Marion County International Raceway, LaRue, OH Once again the nostalgia funny car world came to LaRue, Ohio for the annual Marion County Nostalgia Funny Car Nationals. This event was sponsored in part by Mickey Thompson Tires, Mikes Roofing, Ramco Rental, Mr. Gasket, Classy Carts and Rays Custom Welding.
For some of the racers the event actually kicked off Friday Morning as Johnny DiLoretto from Fox 28 TV out of Columbus, Ohio did his morning show live from MCIR. Johnny interviewed the teams, talked about the event and what type of drag cars the spectator would see. The show was topped off with a few burnouts and a side-by-side run which pitted the Snakebite Mustang against the Damn Yankee Vega. Johnny and The Fox 28 team had a blast and said they would like to do it again next year.

As the sun came up on race day we knew it would be a dry hot day. Many of the teams had arrived Friday night. The rest of the funny car teams came in Saturday morning along with a long list of gassers and other nostalgia cars.
At ten o clock the racers took to the track for bracket qualifying. This was a good time for the funny car teams to get reacquainted with old friends and mingle with the spectators.
Bill Holder from Muscle Car Review was on hand to document the event for a future issue. Bill picked out 7 cars to photograph for the magazine. These cars were brought up to the line to do burnouts.
The cars that Bill selected were the Blown Money 69 Nova of Shaun McHattie, No Money No Funny 69 Nova of Willie Johnson, Excalibur 82 Corvette of George Reidnauer, Glory Daze 68 Camaro of Kevin Johnson, Solid Rock 70 Mustang of Rocky Ausec, Doran Chevrolet 69 Camaro of Steve Timoszyk and The Illinois Patrol 79 Omni of Mike Johnstone. These guys did some great burnouts and launches. It was exciting to have an opportunity to get magazine coverage.

Midday the funny cars were brought out onto the racetrack for introductions. The cars were lined up facing the spectators on the track just like the big 32 & 64 funny car shows of the past.
Early evening brought the show to a start. First out were some exhibition vehicles. Daryl Arnold had his wheelie golf cart performing along with Jim Brewers Peacemaker wheel stander.
It was now time for the racecars. This year we had over 18 gassers. These cars are as wild and unpredictable as the funny cars with much shorter wheelbase. Next up there were four nitro front engine dragsters, which did awesome halftrack burnouts.
First up were the injected funny cars. This year we had four cars in this class. They were Kevin Johnson's Glory Daze 68 Camaro, George Monahan's Rainmaker 77 Arrow, Willie Johnson's No Money No Funny 69 Nova, and Mike Johnstone's Illinois Patrol 79 Omni, and yes Mike is a real police officer.

First pair was the old school injected Glory Daze Camaro taking on the Rainmaker Arrow. Kevin was out first and hung on, as the Arrow seemed to have an ignition problem and sputtered its way down track.
Next pair was the always-smiling Willie Johnson with his somewhat unpredictable No Money, No Funny Nova taking on the Illinois Patrol Omni. Mike was out first but by the stripe Willie had caught up with an 8.53/140 to a 9.04/144.
Next up, blown funny cars. This year we had nine cars competing in the Chicago style format. They were Blown Money 69 Nova driven by Shaun McHattie, Damn Yankee 77 Vega driven by Mark Horvath, Detroit Thunder 56 T-Bird driven by Bill Hallet, Doran Chevrolet 69 Camaro driven by Steve Timoszyk, Excalibur 82 Corvette driven by George Reidnauer Jr., Fuelish 77 Monza driven by Tracy Klingermen, Mutiny 69 Mustang driven by Rob Pfeister, Snakebite 79 Mustang driven by Mike Klontz, and the Solid Rock 70 Mustang driven by Rocky Ausec.
First pair out was the freshly painted Solid Rock Mustang. This car looks great. Rocky took on the always-tough Damn Yankee Vega. Both cars put on a show for the crowd with long burnouts and a few dry hops. The Vega was out first just slightly and held on for the win at 7.34/183 to Solid Rocks very straight and solid 7.98/169.
Next up the Fuelish Monza against the Blown Money Nova. This pairing looked like it was straight out of the past. The Nova took off early, as it appeared that they were having some mechanical issues. The excitement continued as the Monza got up on the wheelie bars, then unloaded the tires and skated down the track making for a good photo opportunity.

Next up was the Excalibur Corvette taking on the Doran Chevrolet Camaro. Both cars smoked out the crowd and the Camaro came up to the line and gave the crowd a show as this was the only clutch car in attendance this year. The Corvette wandered out of the groove just enough to almost put the car sideways. The crowd was on their feet for that one.
Next pair was the Snakebite 79 Mustang and the Mutiny 69 Mustang. This should have been a good paring but the always-deadly Mutiny team was experiencing some unusual mechanical issues. The Snakebite turned off the timers at 7.23/159. This made the Snakebite #1 qualifier for this round.
Last car out was the gorgeous Detroit Thunder 56 T-Bird. This was a single run. Bill ran a 7.62/171.
Second round again brought up the injected cars first. The Glory Daze 69 Camaro took on the Illinois Patrol Omni. The Camaro brought the front end up hard and had to get out of it to calm down the beast, by then it was too late with the Omni running an 8.91/147.

Next the No Money No Funny Nova took on the Rainmaker Arrow that came all the way from Ontario, Canada. Again Willie was on his game and came out ahead of the Rainmaker Arrow, which seem to have the ignition problems behind them.
The two quickest injected cars were No Money No Funny 8.53 and an 8.91 for the Illinois Patrol. These two cars will compete for the injected title.
Second round of the blown cars started with two cars that had mechanical issues in the first round. Both cars did smoky burnouts and it looked like the troubles were fixed. At the hit the Mutiny Mustang bucked and shuddered and Rob just idled it down the track. The Nova appeared to have some issues at first also, but got it under control and powered down the track.
The Excalibur Corvette was next up to take on the Damn Yankee Vega. Mark was out first with the Vega trying to nail down the Good Vibration Reaction Time Award. The Vega ran a 7.33/178 against the Corvette slower but more exciting run.
Next up were the Snakebite Mustang and the Fuelish Monza. We had been waiting for an outstanding run all night and the Snakebite was the one to do it with a 7.00/198 to the Fuelish personal second best run at 7.39/176. This Fuelish car is starting to come around. They should be tough next month at U.S. 131 in Martin, MI.
The Solid Rock Mustang lined up with the Detroit Thunder. Both cars seem like they were out to make a hard run, they started with great burnouts. As they staged the Mustang was not sounding right so the crew shut him off. The T-Bird made a single at 7.7/164.
The Doran Chevrolet Camaro made a single to bring the round to a close.

The injected final was first. The No Money No Funny Nova taking on the Illinois Patrol Omni. Both cars were excited to travel all the way to Ohio and get into the finals. They both did hard burnouts and were ramped up for the run. It was a close start and a very tight finish. Mike Johnstone edged out Willie Johnston with an 8.95 to a 9.09.
The blown final was next. The Damn Yankee against the Snakebite who seemed to have this one locked in. The Vega was popping like they had a killer tune up in it. The Snakebite threw down a killer burnout. As the two staged the Vega tried one last dry hop, the car sputtered and stalled. The Snakebite was staged and the starter motioned to Mike for a single. There was some confusion on the line and the timers did not work. That was a shame as the run looked hard and straight and sure looked like it was a 6 second run in the 200 M.P.H. range.

  • Longest tow which was given to Willie Johnson with The No Money No Funny Nova who came all the way from Edison, N.J.
  • 2nd. & 3rd. Fastest M.P.H. in the first round which went to The Detroit Thunder T-Bird driven by Bill Hallet at 171 and Solid Rock Mustang driven by Rocky Ausec at 169.
  • 2nd & 3rd. quickest E.T. in the second round which went to The Damn Yankee Vega driven by Mark Horvath at 7.33 and Fuelish Monza driven by Tracy Klingerman at 7.39.
  • Len also awarded Rocky Ausec with the hard luck award.
