A New Wrinkle in Hybrids Does Away With Batteries
By now, hybrid vehicles are familiar enough that buyers find nothing peculiar about a car's gasoline engine getting help from an electric motor. But just as drivers have grown comfortable with concepts like regenerative braking and issues like battery life expectancy, new types of hybrids are emerging -- including one that uses no electricity at all.

With drivers yearning for alternatives, manufacturers of products claiming to boost mileage are offering up solutions — in the form of pills, powders, liquid additives and mechanical devices. Motions Denied, Trial Date Set in Mickey Thompson Murder Case
In the Pasadena Courtroom of Superior Court Judge Teri Schwartz today, Michael Goodwin's defense team leader, Deputy Public Defender Elena Saris, presented her oral arguments to back up the written motions submitted over the past several weeks, asking the Court to recuse Prosecutor Alan Jackson, removing him from the case. Judge Schwartz denied the motion as she had in the past, then heard another motion in which Public Defender Saris requested that ten Prosecution witnesses be removed from the Witness List. Judge Schwartz also denied this motion and went on to set September 21, 2006 as a "firm" date to start trial in the more than 18 year old case. Judge Schwartz emphasized that she expected both the defense and the prosecution to be ready to proceed on that date.

Spokane to return to normal operation
Northwest drag racing veteran Herman Marchetti dropped us a line to announce that Spokane Raceway Park will resume normal drag racing next weekend; this weekend was rained out. Last Wednesday, Herman received a call from Jim Tice, Jr., who is now the operator of the track as appointed by the receiver in control of the track books. Tice asked Marchetti if he was interested in helping the track get through the rest of the summer. Herman said yes and he will be returning to Spokane next weekend as the official starter for their Saturday night programs. It is unknown at this time if Spokane will be running any nitro events, although two events are still on the schedule. Herman noted that he is hoping that they will proceed as planned and that he may be trained to launch the big guns by the end of the year. Marchetti worked at the track for three years and had the opportunity to run prestage and stand between the nitro cars when they left. He said, “If you ever get the chance take it. The view is unbelievable and the rush lasts for days!” Herman noted that if anyone associated with the online drag racing groups is going to be in the neighborhood, get in touch with him to hook up. Herman is hoping for good weather next weekend so he can resume some local friendships that he’s missed for the last two years. We at are glad to see this great track back up and on its way to respectability again.

Moe Banned from Spokane got a tip that Orville Moe, the long time owner operator of Spokane Raceway Park has been "fired" by a local judge. The founder of the ADRA and the man who many say ruined the once successful AHRA has been barred from the premisses on behalf of the original track investors who have been involved in a lenghty lawsuit with Moe. A real estate firm will soon appraise the track and eventually it will be sold. Many local racers are praying for a real sanctioning body to step in and help bring this once successful track back to its glory days.
