FIA/UEM European Championship - Rounds 3 & 4
By Phil Cottingham

The third and fourth rounds of the European Championship were shaping up to be two great races; the first was at Mantorp Park in Sweden, followed the next weekend by Gardemoen in Norway.

Sweden saw some great action in all classes during qualifying, 28 Pro Mods trying to get into the 16-car field was probably the highlight for many. Andy Robinson from the UK headed the field with a 6.349 and the bump spot was an impressive 6.680. Tommy Moller headed Top Fuel qualifying in the ex-Doug Herbert car with a 4.845 and the next two cars were also in the 4’s. Unfortunately, heavy rain prevented the eliminations from starting until early afternoon and after the first rounds, there was only time for the second round of Pro Mod before the local curfew ended racing.

Highlight of those first rounds was the Top Fuel race between Lex Joon and Andy Carter, Lex winning with a 4.788 to Andy’s 4.953, which was the quickest side-by-side race ever run in Europe and had the racing continued Lex looked likely to back up the run for a new European record.

A disappointing end to the event but the teams moved on to Norway to fight again and hopefully better weather.

Again, rain spoiled a potentially great event at Gardemoen, one of Europe’s fastest tracks. Only Friday saw action as both Saturday and Sunday were rained off. Fans did get to see some good action on Friday with three Top Fuel cars in the 4’s. The top four in Top Alcohol Dragster were very close, running 5.487 to 5.593. Sverre Dahl running a 6.25 in Top Fuel Bike was another highlight. There would have been many more highlights had the weather not stopped the racing for the second week running leaving everyone to wonder what could have happened.

The UEM bike classes move on to Hockenhiem in Germany before the European Finals at Santa Pod. The FIA classes only have the European Finals left, which hopefully will be blessed with fine weather so that European Drag Racing can entertain the world with the best drag racing outside of the USA!

A very historic announcement was made at Mantorp, a deal has been signed to run an invitational round at the end of the year at the new Formula 1 track in Bahrain, which also has a state of the art drag strip. Even bigger news was that this would be followed in early 2006 by the opening round of the European Drag Racing Championship! Signalling a new era of increased publicity and professionalism for the sport outside of the USA this is truly great news for European Drag Racing.
